The Customer Subscriber Answer System (CSA) on Telstra Exchanges illustrated

TELEPHONE EXCHANGE CSA

All customer lines and payphone lines are connected to a Line Interface Circuit (LIC) in the exchange. Early generation LIC provide line reversal with the meter pulse being provided by an additional hard-wired device called a SEPRM. Whilst later generation LIC provide both line reversal and meter pulses. Irrespective of the exchange type (AXE, S12) or LIC generation, CSA is always a line reversal followed a short time later by the meter pulse.
